The stranger was the theater ticket vendor. Both the vendor and my friend were at the movie theater. My friend was buying a ticket for "Three to Tango" and was about to say "one for 'Three to Tango.'" At the last second, he pronounced each of the first four words like numbers; the vendor understood perfectly (though she didn't laugh).
